Labor Day- Dia do Trabalho

Labor Day is an annual holiday celebrated all over the world. It originated from the eight-hour day movement in the nineteenth century. Labor unions called for eight hours for work, eight hours for play, and eight hours for sleep. It then became a reason for workers to celebrate their social and economic progress in the early twentieth century. Today, people are happy it is a day off work and perhaps forget the origins of this important holiday. Most countries celebrate this day on May 1. In some countries it is called May Day and in others it is known as International Workers’ Day. More and more countries are moving the day to the first Monday in May, so people get a three-day weekend.

People around the world celebrate Labor Day in different ways. In China it marked the beginning of a seven-day holiday called Golden Week. People from all over the country traveled to their hometowns or visited resorts. However, in 2008, the Chinese government went back to the single public holiday. Indians have celebrated Labour Day since May 1, 1927. There are many festivals and processions organized by different labour organizations and people fill the streets for huge parties. Italians celebrate the day with a huge, free music concert in Rome. Up to one million people attend the spectacular. For most people, it is a chance to enjoy the nice weather and have a picnic with family, friends and co-workers.

"Automated Teller Machine" é caixa eletrônico em inglês, embora todos usem a abreviacao ATM.

O mais interessante, pelo menos para mim, é a disposicao desses caixas nas cidades européias, porque eles sao verdadeiramente "buracos" na parede.... sem qualquer protecao ao redor... nem portas blindadas ou qualquer coisa do tipo como vemos no Brasil.

A expressao "folgado" tem várias conotacoes em Protuguês e em Inglês nao poderia ser diferente!

Quando essa expressao se refere à uma pessoa que nao faz nada que é acomodada, exisrem dois termos para ela: lazy e layabout.

Já quando a expressao se refere à pessoa que precisa de um "chá de semancol" Aí temos dois termos que cabem melhor: to have a/ the cheek ou to have a/the nerves.

Wenn - é usado em sentencas no condicional.

            "Wenn er nicht bals kommt, gehen wir ohne ihn aus." 

              (Se ele nao vier, saimos sem ele.)

Ob - é usado em questoes indiretas que exigem resposta: sim/ nao.

        "Weißt du ob Julia krank ist?"

          (Você sabe se a Julia está doente?)

Top 10 list of Friday 13th Myths

It is held in fear by many superstitious people and here's a top 10 list of the reasons why.

1. Fear of Friday the 13th is called "Paraskavedekatriaphobia", derived from three Greek words.

2. Any month that begins on a Sunday will contain a Friday the 13th, and there is at least one Friday the 13th in every calendar year.

3. Few people are prepared to marry on Friday the 13th. But in 1913 a pastor in Middletown, New Jersey, decrying the superstition, offered to marry couples free on that date.

4. Rossini, the composer, regarded Friday as an unlucky day and 13 as an unlucky number. He died on Friday November 13 1868.

5. One recent survey conducted in Asheville, North Carolina, claimed that 17 million to 21 million people in the United States are affected by Friday the 13th, avoiding taking flights or, in some cases, even getting out of bed.

6. On Friday October 13 1307, officers of King Philip IV of France carried out mass arrests in a well-coordinated dawn raid that left several thousand Templars - knights, sergeants, priests, and serving brethren - in chains, charged with heresy, blasphemy, various obscenities, and homosexual practices.

7. One theory is that the Friday the 13th superstitions originated in a Norse myth about 12 gods having a feast in Valhalla. The mischievous Loki crashed the party as an uninvited 13th guest and arranged for Hod, the blind god of darkness, to shoot Baldur, the god of joy and gladness, with a mistletoe-tipped arrow. Baldur was killed and the Earth was plunged into darkness and mourning as a result.

8. Researchers in 1993 found that on Friday the 13th fewer people were driving than normal, because of superstition, yet there were more transport accidents even though there were fewer vehicles on the road.

Actions speak louder than words - a proverb meaning that it is better to do something about a problem than just talk about it.

Act of God -  an occurrence (usually an accident) for which no human is responsible; an act of nature such as a storm, an earthquake or windstorm.

A friend in need is a friend indeed - a proverb meaning that a true friend is a person who will help you when you really need.

Das heißt, jemand bringt seine Sachen oder sein Geld in Sicherheit. Was steckt dahinter? Schafe werden auf einer nassen Weide schnell krank. Darmparasiten und faulende Klauen setzen ihnen zu. Ein guter Schäfer bringt seine Tiere deshalb schnell auf eine trockene Weide.

"Trazer as ovelhas para (um lugar) seco."

Essa expressao está ligada à seguranca do dinheiro que se tenha. O melhor é proteger as ovelhas da chuva para que seus pêlos nao se estragem por estarem molhados.

"Einen Vogel haben"

Im Mittelalter glaubten die Menschen, das im Kopf von Leuten, die sich seltsam benehmen, Vögel nisten. Auch die Spreichwörter, "eien Meise haben" oder "bei dir piept1s wohl" kommen  daher.

"Ter um pássaro"

Bom, esse provérbio se refere à pessoas que tenham um comportamento estranho, acreditava-se na Idade Média que a pessoa tinha um pássaro dentro de si...  no português seria equivalente a "ter um parafuso solto"....

" Jemandem einen Bäaren aufbinden"

Das bedeutet, jemandem anzuflunkern. Sprachforscher wissen nicht genau, woher das Sprichwort kommt. Möglicherweise von Jägern, die Größe und Gefährlichkeit ihrer Jagdbeute übertrieben schilderten. 

"Esconder um urso de alguém" 

Esse provérbio se relaciona as mentiras contatas e o trabalho que se tem para escondê-las.
